The [[Darwin Streaming Server |http://metaxlr8.com:1220]], the open source version of Apple's ~QuickTime Streaming Server technology that allows you to send streaming media to clients across the Internet using the industry standard RTP and RTSP protocols. While sharing the same code base as ~QuickTime Streaming Server, Darwin Streaming Server is an open source project intended for developers who need to stream ~QuickTime and ~MPEG-4 media on alternative platforms such as Windows, Linux, and Solaris, or those developers who need to extend and/or modify the existing streaming server code to fit their needs.

Our [[Darwin Streaming Server |http://metaxlr8.com:1220]], shown in operation in the image above. It has been used to distribute realtime video with audio to up to 200 simultaneous viewers.  The server uses port 80 to improve the performance for users behind some firewalls.

The streaming server can also distribute live webcasts. To do a live webcast from your location you need a system able to capture the video feed from the videocamera or webcam and stream it to the server which acts as reflector and distributes it to the viewers. The [[QuickTime broadcaster|http://www.apple.com/quicktime/broadcaster/]] (Mac only) and [[Wirecast|http://www.varasoftware.com/products/wirecast/]] work.

In the image above, the server is use to distribute a [[realtime broadcast from Second Life|http://transumanar.com/index.php/site/first_test_webcasting_from_second_life/]]. Live webcasting from Second Life will be a killer application: it will permit distributing live video coverage of events in Second Life also to the majority of Web users who are not Second Life users, to those without ~PCs with sufficient power to run Second Life, and to SL users away from their computers. If the format is compatible with ~QuickTime, live webcasting from Second Life also permits distributing live video coverage of events in Second Life to other locations in Second Life. Showing Second Life live events on the web, to thousands (or even much more, depending on the streaming servers used) of persons besides the more or less 100 avatars that can fit in a sim, will also permit answering to one of the most common question of marketers.

If you are a user and have received all the access passwords:

STREAMING VIDEO FILES

Assuming that the name of your streaming video file is mymovie.mov and that you have postprocessed it for streaming

Upload mymovie.mov to metaxlr8.com in /usr/local/movies

The streaming URL is rtsp://metaxlr8.com/mymovie.mov (don't click, is an example)

You can also create a playlist. A playlist is synchronized: all users see the same framess at the same time. You can include multiple streaming video files in a playlist.

To create a playlist, access the [[Darwin Streaming Server console|http://metaxlr8.com:1220]] and go to the Playlists menu.

BROADCASTING

The instructions below are for the [[Quick Time Broadcaster|http://www.apple.com/quicktime/broadcaster/]] (Mac OSX only).

In the Network tab:

Transmission: Automatic Unicast (Announce)
Host name: rtsp://metaxlr8.com/
File: mystream

In the Audio and Video tabs: adjust all settings as appropriate to your system.

[[OpenSim|http://opensimulator.org/]] is a BSD Licensed Open Source project to develop a functioning virtual worlds server platform capable of supporting multiple clients and servers in a heterogeneous grid structure. ~OpenSim is written in C#, and can run under Mono or the Microsoft .NET runtimes.

To enter our ~OpenSim metaXLR8 region on Central Grid, you should first create a Central Grid account and avatar on the [[Central Grid website|http://www.centralgrid.com/]], and set the Home region of your avatar to metaXLR8. Then, use the same commands above with:

-loginuri http://maingrid.centralgrid.com:8002

For example on Windows:

[[SHOUTcast|http://shoutcast.com/]] is a multiplatform freeware digital audio streaming technology developed by Nullsoft. It allows audio content, primarily in ~MP3 or ~HE-AAC format, to be broadcast to and from media player software, enabling hobbyists and professionals to create Internet radio/Web radio networks.

~SHOUTcast consists of a client-server model, with each component communicating via a network protocol that intermingles audio data with metadata such as song titles and the station name. It uses HTTP as a transport protocol, although multicast is another option.
